Dan is Managing Partner and CEO of Dan Martinez
& Associates, L.P. with over 26 years of state tax experience.
Since 1991, Dan has provided his clients with an array of
consulting services in almost every area of state and local
taxation; specifically sales & use, franchise and miscellaneous
taxes for larger corporations and direct pay permit holders.
In addition, he has represented many of his clients before
the Comptroller on state tax matters, including audits and
administrative hearings. Dan's extensive experience has enabled
him to help many clients recover millions of dollars in tax
overpayments.
Prior to his founding Dan Martinez & Associates L.P., Dan
was a Senior Auditor for the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts
where he conducted a wide array of audits. During his ten-year
employment with the State, Dan conducted sales and use, franchise,
motor vehicle, motor fuels, criminal justice and other miscellaneous
tax audits. In addition, he testified at administrative law
hearings in order to defend audit assessments and presented
seminars to special interest groups.
Dan received his B.B.A. degree in Accounting from Pan American
University. He is a member of the Comptroller of Public Accounts
Taxpayer Advisory Group and a member of IPT (Institute for
Professionals in Taxation).

Henry V. Serrano, CPA
Chief Operating Officer

Henry recently joined the firm as a partner and Chief Operating Officer, with more than 19 years of multi-state tax experience. Henry will provide sales, use, franchise and income tax consulting, as well as compliance and audit defense solutions to the firm’s clients.
Prior to joining the Firm, Henry served as Senior Tax Manager at Cherry, Bekaert & Holland’s National Restaurant & Retail Tax Practice in the Metro Atlanta office. He performed refund review projects and helped clients implement best tax practices and compliance filing to minimize state taxes.
Henry spent over eight years with Big 5 firms, which included Arthur Andersen and KPMG. At KPMG, Henry assisted clients with tax audit and compliance issues and with the implementation and/or testing of SOX 404 tax controls. Henry has extensive experience serving clients in the retail, restaurant, oil and gas industries, as well with unclaimed property, and voluntary disclosure agreements.
Henry also worked over 11 years with the Texas Comptrollers Audit Division. As an audit supervisor, he performed audits on sales and use, franchise, production, motor fuels and other major Texas taxes. Henry assisted tax policy and assisted attorneys with regard to administrative taxpayer hearings. He was one of only three Texas franchise tax supervisors in the nation.
Henry holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting and Information Systems from the University of Texas of the Permian Basin. Henry is a Texas Certified Public Accountant and a member of the Texas Society of CPAs, where he serves as a member of the Texas State Taxation Conference Planning Committee.

Roman's primary responsibilities include acting
as a liaison with the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts
and the client.
Prior to joining the Firm, Roman was a five-term (10 year) Texas Representative of District 148 which included Downtown Houston.
During his tenure in the Texas Legislature, Roman was instrumental in drafting legislation that advanced public education and enhanced the curriculum at the University of Houston. Roman also worked with other legislators to improve the quality of life and safety of his constituents.
Roman attended Yale University and was heavily involved in many organizations that served the Hispanic community.

Ernest is a Senior Auditor with over ten
years of multi-state sales and use tax experience. Since
joining the Firm, Ernest has worked on managed audits and
overpayment reviews.
Prior to joining the Firm, Ernest worked in public
accounting for five years. During his tenure, both at Arthur
Andersen LLP and Ryan & Company, Ernest acted as project lead
and contributor for several multi-state sales and use tax
engagements including managed audits, audit defense,
overpayment reviews, due diligence reviews and tax process
improvements.
Ernest is a former Texas sales and use tax auditor with extensive
experience in sales tax laws and audit procedures.
Ernest is a Certified Public Accountant licensed in the state
of Texas and a member of the Institute for Professionals in
Taxation.
Ernest received a B.A and B.S. from the University of Texas
at Austin, and a B.B.A. in Accounting from the Texas A&M University
- Corpus Christi.

Louis is a Senior Auditor with 24 years of sales and use tax experience. Since joining the Firm, Louis has worked on managed audits, overpayment reviews, audit defense and industry-specific training.
Prior to joining the Firm, Louis worked as a contract auditor for the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts for the last four years. Prior to him working as a contract auditor for the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts he worked as an independent sales and use tax consultant for several sales and use tax firms. He performed audits of the different taxes administered. He performed sales and use, franchise, motor vehicle, motor fuels, and other miscellaneous tax audits. Louis has extensive experience with direct pay holders. He testified at administrative law hearings in order to defend audit adjustments.
Louis is a former Texas sales and use tax auditor with extensive experience in sales tax laws and audit procedures.
Louis received his B.B.A. in Accounting from the University of Houston.

Emily Chen
Auditor I
Emily is an Auditor I with strong computer skills. She works as an assistant for senior auditors on complex tax issues and financial statement analysis.
Prior to joining the Firm, Emily worked as an assistant manager at Moshi-Moshi Imports, Inc. During her past employment, she gained experience in marketing, accounts payable and receivable. She gained IT experience through a service-learning program at the University of Houston where she designed and managed a technology based project to technically underserved communities.
Emily received her B.B.A. in Accounting from the University of Houston and had recently completed her M.S. in Finance degree. She is currently pursuing her CPA certification.

Thu Nguyen
Tax Assistant/Programmer
Thu is a Tax Assistant/Programmer with over four years of office and Information Technology experience.
Prior to joining the
firm, Thu worked as a lab assistant for Loyola University
Department of IT and had been trained as a technology intern
for Louisiana Technology Council. She gained office
experience through a volunteering at the Multi-Ethnic
Community Center and through a marketing internship with
Housing Authority of New Orleans.
Thu
received her B.B.A. in both International Business and
Computer Information Systems from Loyola University in New
Orleans, Louisiana.
